‘Drawing after the Antique at the British Museum, 1809–1817: “Free” Art Education and the Advent of the Liberal State’ by Martin Myrone
Writing for British Art Studies (April 2017), Martin Myrone examines the British Museum’s opening of the Townley Gallery to art students from 1808. Based on an analysis of the 1809–17 student attendance register, presented alongside a full transcription and directory, Myrone argues that while this access was framed as a victory for liberal public education, it ultimately served to further entrench the middle-class dominance of art training.
